Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP)

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) refers to the three primary building systems disciplines responsible for a structure’s environmental control, power distribution, and water services. Together, these systems represent a substantial portion of the total construction cost, especially on commercial and institutional projects.

Disciplines:

  • Mechanical: Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and other climate control systems
  • Electrical: Power distribution, lighting, communications, and backup power systems
  • Plumbing: Water supply, drainage, sanitary piping, and related fixtures

MEP design and coordination are critical because these systems must be carefully integrated within the building’s structure and architecture to ensure efficiency, safety, and code compliance.
